Design is basically the creation of a plan for the construction of an object or a system.

The term "design" takes on additional characteristics depending upon the discipline in which it is applied. The one common aspect regarding design is that it involves some degree of mathematics.

It may be the case that designers are faced with optimizing constraints as a design is developed. For example, a new packaging design may need to supply a specific volume for its contents.

Whether designs are two-dimensional or three-dimensional, they all involve planning, reasoning, measurement, creativity and a degree of artistic talent. Design is a blending of skills and knowledge, including mathematics.
